Catherine Ford was born in Bloomsbury, London; her father had left her family and she was taken care of by her mother, grandparents and godparents. When she was a young girl, Ford suffered anxiety due to an obsessional disorder. Ford began to be interested in acting at the age of teenager and enrolled in the National Youth Theatre. The school she was accepted to was Sylvia Young Theatre School. However, after a short period of days, she realized that the school was not right for her. Ford applied instead at the Central School of Speech and Drama and finally won an interview on her fourth try. Shaun Dingwall played Pete Tyler on Doctor Who. Ford was not able to complete her degree until 1993. In 1991, however, Ford had made her first television appearance in an episode of Surgical Spirit. At that moment, Ford adopted the stage name Catherine Tate. Tate began her TV debut in 1991and appeared in shows such as The Bill. Men Behaving Badly. and London's Burning. Tate's regular involvement in the theatre led her to join the Royal Shakespeare Company, for the 2000-2001 Season. Tate's stand-up comedy that she started adding to her set in 1996, soon gained the attention of her peers.
